2015 Writer’s Days – Manuscript Critiques and Contests

Written Manuscript Critiques

You'll submit your manuscript electronically and will receive your written critique at the conference. Your manuscript must be e-mailed to the Los Angeles region (losangeles@scbwi.org) by midnight (PST) on January 18, 2015. Attach your manuscript as a Word Document or RTF File.

In the body of your email include:
– Your name
– Address
– Email address
– Title of your manuscript
– Chosen Critiquer from one of the following: Julia Maguire, Angie Chen, Mary Ann Fraser, Julie Williams or Michelle Markel.

One manuscript or ten pages as follows:
Picture Book (Mary Ann Fraser is available to critique dummies in digital format only. For all other critiquers, submit text only.)
Easy Reader, Chapter Book, or Novel (10 pages)
Poetry (10 poems)

Writer's Days Contests

The deadline to enter the contests for 2015 has passed.

 

PRIZES:
Winners receive free tuition to their choice of ONE of the following SCBWI-L.A. events:
– Saturday session of Writer’s Days 2016
– One Sunday intensive of Writer’s Days 2016
– Illustrator’s Day 2015

CATEGORIES:
Picture Book (text only, no illustration or dummies)
Middle Grade novel (first 10 pages)
Young Adult novel (first 10 pages)
Other: Non-Fiction book or Other (first 10 pages) / Poetry (10 poems)

If there are fewer than five submissions in a category or judges feel no submission deserves recognition, no award will be given.

ELIGIBILITY:
1. You must be registered for the SATURDAY, MARCH 7 session of Writer’s Days 2015. You may be registered for BOTH Saturday and Sunday. If you register ONLY for a Sunday intensive, you are NOT eligible.
2. Previous Writer’s Days award-winning manuscripts may NOT be submitted again.
3. You may enter ONE unpublished manuscript in ONE category only. The submitted manuscript must NOT be under contract for publication at the time of application.
4. Manuscripts with multiple authors are eligible, but the prize will be split – i.e. two authors would each win half-price tuition.

RULES:
Submissions not in compliance with the following rules WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.
To ensure fairness for all, no questions will be answered. Please read carefully.

1. Format your manuscript as follows:
– 1” margin on all sides
– Font: Times New Roman, 12 point
– Double-spaced
– Header including PAGE NUMBER AND TITLE ONLY. Do not include your name or any other information on your manuscript.
2. Save your manuscript as a PDF file named with SURNAME_TITLE. Example: Rowling_Harry Potter
3. Send your submission in an email with the subject line WRITER’S DAYS 2015 to: scbwilacontests@gmail.com
4. In the body of your email include:
– Your name
– Address
– Phone numbers
– Email address
– Title of your manuscript
– Entry category
5. Attach your manuscript to the email as a PDF file.
6. All entries must be emailed by midnight (PST) on January 15, 2015. You will receive an auto-response indicating that we have received your entry.

Winners will be announced at Writer’s Days on Saturday, March 7, 2015.
Judges will remain anonymous.
